The makers of Flipper Zero reverse course on halting official firmware development, pledging renewed resources for the open-source community after widespread backlash.

Flipper Devices Walks Back Firmware Freeze After Million-Strong Community Revolts

Flipper Devices has reversed its decision to stop developing the official Flipper Zero firmware, following an outpouring of community outrage over the weekend.

The company had announced it would limit future work to infrastructure maintenance and critical bug fixes, shifting focus to building new hardware products. The reasoning was pragmatic — the device's firmware is constrained to just 700 KB of flash memory, which the team hit long ago. To work around it, they moved core features into dynamically loaded apps from the microSD card.

But the community saw it differently. With over one million Flipper Zero units now in the wild, an entire ecosystem of alternative firmware projects has flourished, and users made it clear they still care deeply about official development.

"We didn't expect so many people to care so deeply about the development of the official Flipper Zero firmware," the team wrote. "It's genuinely moving that this project and everything we've built together matters to you."

The company is now allocating resources to support community contributions under a new approach. Direct real-time communication with over a million users has become impossible, however — the team had to disable direct messages on social media accounts and is asking users to reserve GitHub issues for genuinely important, broadly-needed feature requests rather than personal wishlist items.

The Flipper Zero launched on Kickstarter in 2020 amid accusations of being a scam. Four years and one million units later, the team can say with confidence that they delivered on every promise — and now they're recommitting to the open firmware that made it all possible.
