On Saturday, OpenAI announced that a yet-unreleased model had solved ten open problems in mathematics — spanning fields from coding theory to algebraic topology. The model, not yet publicly available, reportedly produced proofs verified by the Lean theorem prover. The announcement came without fanfare: a single blog post, no press conference, no demo. But the implications are seismic.
Within hours, programmer and essayist Fernando Borretti published "Mathematics Without Mathematicians", a sharp philosophical response that quickly climbed to the top of Hacker News with 39 points and 51 comments. Borretti systematically dismantles what he calls "coping" arguments — the claim that humans will direct AIs toward problems, teach the math AI discovers, or curate which results matter. "The AIs will exceed humans in taste and intuition," he writes. "At some point, the human pointing the way will get worse results than the human saying 'here's a proof checker, have fun' and paying for the tokens."
His bleakest argument: no human needs to understand the math AI produces. AIs will do frontier math, downstream AIs will apply it to frontier science, and further AIs will convert that into engineering. "Firms that put humans in the loop to understand the results will be outcompeted by those which don't," he predicts. The result is "a demon-haunted world, full of marvelous devices whose operation we will not understand, based on engineering principles we will not understand, discovered using formalisms we will not understand."
The Hacker News discussion was split. Some pushed back: "Math might get a lot bigger and then there might be proportionately fewer people but not necessarily in total," argued one commenter, noting that human intermediation in economics and society won't vanish overnight. Others pointed out that Borretti's "demon-haunted world" is, ironically, the state humanity lived in for most of history — surrounded by forces we didn't understand. A third camp accused the essay of being "ragebait," but the thread's staying power (51 comments in under a day) suggests it struck a nerve.
Borretti himself hedges in a postscript: "The future is not certain." He acknowledges the best counterargument — that RL doesn't generalize well beyond verifiable domains like formalized math and coding. But he adds: "Billions of dollars and thousands of very smart people — and, increasingly, very smart models — are being thrown at this problem. How long does this cope last?"
