Linux has crossed a threshold that once seemed distant. According to StatCounter's July 2026 figures, the open-source operating system now accounts for 10.65% of desktop web usage in North America — the first time it has reached double digits in the region.

The climb has been steady. In July 2024, Linux sat at roughly 4.45% globally. Two years later, North America alone has more than doubled that figure. Cloudflare's own traffic data lends independent support, showing Linux client requests trending upward on a similar trajectory.

What changed? Valve's Steam Deck brought a Linux-based gaming device into living rooms at scale, and Proton — the compatibility layer that lets Windows games run on Linux — removed the last major barrier for PC gamers considering the switch. Meanwhile, distributions like Ubuntu, Fedora, and Linux Mint have matured to the point where everyday productivity, web applications, and creative workflows no longer feel like compromises.

StatCounter's methodology measures web traffic from desktop browsers, not installed base — so the number reflects active usage, not sales or shipments. The distinction matters, but the direction is unmistakable. After three decades of single-digit market share, Linux on the desktop is no longer a rounding error.
