Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta Warn Against 'Premature Restrictions' on Open-Weight AI

A coalition of 25 major technology companies — led by Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, and Palantir — published an open letter on Friday urging U.S. policymakers to avoid "premature restrictions" on open-weight artificial intelligence models, arguing that heavy-handed regulation would stifle competition and drive innovation overseas.

The letter lands at a tense moment. Chinese AI startup Moonshot AI recently released Kimi K3, an open-weight model that outperforms leading American offerings on several industry benchmarks. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC on Tuesday that the Trump administration is investigating whether Chinese firms are stealing American intellectual property, and said the government has the authority to sanction them.

But the tech coalition pushed back. "Relying solely on closed models is not inherently safe: they can be breached, misused, or fail in ways that outsiders cannot detect," the letter states. "Concentrating advanced AI capabilities behind a small number of closed models compounds that risk."

Open-weight models — which users can download, modify, and run on their own infrastructure — have become a flashpoint in AI policy. The coalition argues they strengthen competition and ensure benefits are broadly shared rather than locked behind proprietary APIs.

Notably absent from the signatories: OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which build closed, proprietary models and are reportedly gearing up for massive public offerings. Their silence underscores the growing industry divide between open-weight advocates and companies whose business models depend on controlled access.

The letter drew high-profile amplification. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared it on their personal social media accounts. Elon Musk, who runs an AI business under SpaceX, posted on X that the letter "has my full support."

The letter represents the most coordinated industry pushback yet against potential U.S. restrictions on open-weight AI — a debate that will likely intensify as Chinese models continue to close the performance gap.
