Europe is burning through records that were never supposed to fall.

On Friday, Germany reached 41.3°C (106.3°F) near the city of Saarbruecken, close to the French border — the highest temperature ever recorded in the country. It wasn't just Germany. A continent-wide heatwave has been rewriting the books across Western and Central Europe.

The United Kingdom broke its 50-year-old June temperature record of 35.6°C (96°F) on three consecutive days this week, according to the Met Office. Switzerland and France also set new June highs. France has taken the heaviest human toll: dozens of people, both young and elderly, have died from the extreme heat.

Italy's Ministry of Health issued its highest red alert for 18 cities — including Milan, Rome, Turin, Venice, Genoa, Florence, and Bologna — with temperatures expected to climb as high as 39°C (102°F) through the weekend.

The heat is breaking more than records. German national rail operator Deutsche Bahn is offering customers free cancellations on long-distance bookings through early next week, warning that its infrastructure is under strain from sun exposure, buckled tracks, and wildfire risk. The Ironman European Championship in Frankfurt was forced to shorten its cycling and running segments. Outdoor events across the region have been disrupted, and power grids are feeling the pressure.

Climate scientists note that a heatwave of this severity was "virtually impossible 50 years ago." It is no longer impossible. It is here, and it is moving east — toward Poland and beyond — with the peak still expected over the weekend.
