Xbox Loses 64 Cents on Every Dollar as Microsoft Cuts 3,200 Jobs and Sheds Four Studios

Microsoft's gaming division admits its business is "not healthy" in a candid internal memo announcing the most significant restructure in Xbox history, with Double Fine, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs heading for the exits.

Microsoft's Xbox division is undergoing the most dramatic restructuring in its 24-year history, with 3,200 job cuts planned through fiscal year 2027 and four studio departures confirmed in an internal memo published on Xbox Wire Monday.

Approximately 1,600 role eliminations take effect immediately. Compulsion Games and Double Fine Productions — the latter acquired by Microsoft in 2019 — will return to independent management with their IP and catalogs intact. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs have entered terms to join new ownership with funding to complete their respective titles, while Arkane's management in France has begun mandatory consultation with its Works Council to review "potential strategic options."

The memo is strikingly candid about the division's finances. "Our business today is not healthy," it states, revealing that Xbox operates at margins 3 to 10 times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses. In a typical year, the memo says, the company lost 64 cents for every dollar invested in studio operations.

The admission lands against what leadership calls "the most severe hardware crisis in [gaming's] history." Despite bets on Game Pass, multi-platform releases, and an acquisition spree that peaked with the $68.7 billion Activision Blizzard deal, the growth trajectory never matched expectations. Reductions will ripple across Activision, Bethesda, Blizzard, King, and Mojang — though no publicly announced games are being cancelled.

In a structural signal, Minecraft studio Mojang and Candy Crush maker King will now report directly to the CEO, elevated above the rest of the portfolio as platform-scale properties. The restructuring raises existential questions about the subscription-and-acquisition model that has defined Xbox strategy for a decade.
