A tour beneath Manhattan's streets reveals one of the world's most complex underground utility networks — from gravity-fed water tunnels to the steam rising from manholes.

New York City is unlike any other city in the United States. It is the most densely populated area in the country by far, absolutely packed with buildings, businesses, homes, and people. But for all that you can see walking the streets or flying overhead, there is a whole other world of infrastructure that makes the city possible below the surface.
Civil engineer Grady Hillhouse, in a recent [Practical Engineering](https://practical.engineering/blog/2026/7/21/whats-under-your-feet-in-new-york-city) piece, peels back the paving and soil to reveal what author David Macaulay called the city's "massive root system." The tour begins with the most essential utility: water.
New York City's water system is famously gravity-fed, with most of the source water coming from upstate reservoirs at a higher elevation. Remarkably, it requires no filtration — the source watersheds are fiercely protected to keep contamination out. Dotted throughout the streets are more than 900 water sampling stations that let officials continuously test the quality of water at the end of the distribution system.
Water mains run at high pressure not just to move water efficiently, but because that pressure pushing out keeps contamination from getting in. Any crack, hole, or break in a water main becomes a one-way street — from in to out. The pipes run in a grid pattern for redundancy, ensuring water never stagnates in dead-end branches.
Then there is electricity. Unlike most cities where power lines crisscross overhead on utility poles, roughly 85 percent of New York's electrical distribution lines run underground. Part of it is about aesthetics — lines clutter the skyline. Part is safety — keeping distribution-level voltages away from people and vehicles. And part is reliability: a storm that topples a pole in the suburbs is an inconvenience; the same outage in Manhattan could affect hundreds of thousands.
And then there is the steam. The iconic plumes rising from manholes across the city are not sewer gas or subway exhaust — they are part of Con Edison's district steam system, one of the largest in the world, delivering pressurized steam through more than 100 miles of underground pipes to heat and cool buildings across Manhattan. Most people walk over it every day without a second thought. But peel back the asphalt, and you find one of the engineering wonders of the modern world.
