We're Squandering LEDs' Potential to Save Our Night Skies
LED lighting was supposed to reduce energy use and light pollution. Instead, bad decisions turned efficient technology into a driver of skyglow — but there is a better way.
LED lighting was supposed to be the environmental win-win: slash energy consumption by up to 80 percent while giving cities better control over light pollution. Instead, as Paul Bogard reports in a sweeping feature for IEEE Spectrum, the efficiency dividend has been squandered — cities and developers took the savings and bought more lights, not better ones.
The problem is not the LED itself but how we deploy it. High-color-temperature LEDs in the 4000K to 5000K range — the harsh blue-white light now ubiquitous in streetlights and commercial façades — scatter dramatically in the atmosphere. Rayleigh scattering, the same physics that makes the sky blue, means blue-rich light travels farther and creates more skyglow per lumen than the warm amber of the low-pressure sodium lamps it replaced.
Simon Thorp, a London lighting designer, measured just two lux in Trafalgar Square — 10 to 20 times the illuminance of a full moon — and called it "very comfortable." Meaningful visibility does not require the stadium-bright flood that now washes over most city centers after dark.
The solutions are well understood and already demonstrated. Flagstaff, Arizona, the world's first International Dark Sky City, enforces full-cutoff fixtures, warm color temperatures below 2700K, and adaptive dimming — and its night skies remain visible. Tucson and Pittsburgh have adopted similar codes. The barrier is not technical. It is inertia, outdated procurement specifications, and the false belief that more light equals more safety (studies consistently show the relationship is weak at best).
Commenters on Hacker News, where the story rose to the front page, noted that much of the blame lies with municipal procurement contracts locked into 4000K specs written a decade ago, before the downsides of blue-rich LEDs were widely understood.
As Bogard puts it, LEDs gave humanity a rare second chance at the night sky. We are halfway through squandering it.
