Two powerful earthquakes rocked Venezuela's northern coast on Wednesday evening, striking just 39 seconds apart in what seismologists call a rare "doublet" event. A magnitude 7.2 foreshock was immediately followed by a 7.5 mainshock — the strongest tremor to hit the country since 1900 — collapsing more than 100 buildings in the coastal state of La Guaira alone and shutting down Caracas's international airport.

As of Thursday, authorities confirmed at least 188 people dead and over 1,500 hospitalized, with 157 still missing. Interim President Delcy Rodríguez declared a state of emergency and has been in "constant contact" with the Trump administration. The United States pledged $150 million in aid — $50 million to groups already operating in Venezuela and $100 million to a UN humanitarian fund — while Mexico, Canada, the UK, and the Vatican have also mobilized assistance. The Pentagon said it "stands ready" to provide airlift and logistics support.

The disaster compounds an already severe humanitarian crisis. Oxfam warned that an estimated 7.9 million Venezuelans needed aid before the quakes hit. The USGS attributed the doublet to Venezuela's Bocono fault, a complex strike-slip system. "We saw five buildings collapse vertically in front of my eyes," said survivor Hector Moran Cirkovic, describing the moment from a beach club in La Guaira. "It was brutal and very fast. There weren't even five seconds to leave."
