Top AI Companies Hide $1.65 Trillion in Off-Balance-Sheet Debt
A Nikkei Asia investigation reveals Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle are hiding an estimated $1.65 trillion in debt off their balance sheets through special purpose vehicles — on top of $1.35 trillion in reported debt.
Five US tech giants — Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon, Meta, and Oracle — are concealing an estimated $1.65 trillion in debt that doesn't appear on their balance sheets, according to an investigation by Nikkei Asia. That figure sits on top of the $1.35 trillion in debt the companies officially reported in their most recent quarter.
Meta alone has amassed approximately $420 billion in off-balance-sheet obligations, highlighting the enormous financial stakes behind the AI data center construction boom. The companies are using special purpose vehicles and legally distinct subsidiaries — the same accounting techniques Enron deployed before its spectacular 2001 collapse — to make their financial reporting appear healthier than it actually is.
"The accounting treatment itself is in fashion," technical accounting consultant Tom Selling told Bloomberg. "But what if one of these companies was a house of cards and was propping itself up with this accounting treatment? To me, that's the risk."
The investigation adds fuel to ongoing warnings of an AI bubble, with experts pointing to the widening gulf between company valuations and their comparatively modest profits. The tech giants are committing vast sums to data center buildouts as a long-term bet on AI demand — while simultaneously selling new shares to raise funds, risking equity dilution and a drop in investor confidence.
Four of the five companies are set to report second quarter earnings in the coming days. The pressure to demonstrate returns on these massive capital outlays has never been higher.
Commenters on Hacker News discussed the investigation, with many drawing parallels to the dot-com era's infrastructure overbuild and warning that the AI industry's capital expenditure trajectory may not be sustainable without a corresponding surge in revenue.
