Built by Post Office engineer Tommy Flowers in 1943–44, Colossus was a radical departure from everything that came before it. At a time when "computer" meant a person doing arithmetic by hand, Flowers built a machine with roughly 2,000 vacuum tubes that read encrypted teletype messages from punched paper tape at photoelectric speed. The later Colossus II, deployed just before D-Day, packed 2,400 tubes and processed 25,000 characters per second — a speed not far short of Intel's first microprocessor three decades later.

The Cipher It Broke

Colossus wasn't built to crack Enigma — that story belongs to Alan Turing's earlier bombes. Colossus targeted something far more dangerous: the Lorenz cipher, codenamed "Tunny" by the British. Unlike Enigma, which carried tactical field communications, Tunny was used by the German Armed Forces High Command in Berlin. Messages were often signed by Adolf Hitler himself and contained strategic battle plans from the Eastern and Western fronts.

Breaking Tunny required three separate intellectual breakthroughs. First, a young codebreaker named Bill Tutte reverse-engineered the Lorenz machine's inner workings from nothing but intercepted ciphertext — a feat his colleagues described as "uncannily accurate." Then Alan Turing devised "Turingery," a statistical method for deducing the machine's wheel settings. Finally, Flowers built Colossus to automate the crushing volume of binary math Tutte's method demanded.

Ten Months, In Secret

When Flowers proposed an all-electronic machine, Bletchley Park's advisors rejected the idea. Conventional wisdom held that vacuum tubes were too unreliable — each contained a hot filament, and with thousands of tubes, one would surely blow at any moment. Flowers discovered the opposite: leaving tubes on continuously made them more reliable than electromagnetic relays.

Undeterred, he retreated to his Post Office laboratory in London and built Colossus anyway. He and a small team worked day and night for ten months. "I don't think they understood very clearly what I was proposing until they actually had the machine," Flowers later recalled. "They just couldn't believe it."

By the end of the war, ten Colossi ran around the clock at Bletchley Park in bombproof buildings, forming the world's first electronic computing facility. The intelligence they produced gave Allied commanders an unparalleled view of German strategies, strengths, and tactical intentions.

Erased From History

Then came the orders to destroy it. British authorities, determined to maintain ultrasecrecy into the Cold War, ordered the Colossi broken up. Only two were spared. Operators and engineers were sworn to silence for decades. "All that was left were the deep holes in the floor where the machines had stood," recalled operator Dorothy Du Boisson.

The secrecy held until the 1970s, and full details only emerged in the 2000s. Flowers, who pioneered clock pulses, bit-stream generators, and shift registers in Colossus, received little public recognition during his lifetime. The IEEE Milestone plaque — to be displayed outside Block H at Bletchley Park — is a long-overdue acknowledgment of what he and his team achieved.

No one can say precisely how much Colossus shortened the war. But if the intelligence it unlocked moved the Allied advance forward by even six months, the number of lives saved is counted in the millions.
