SpaceX Launches Two Falcon 9 Rockets Just 38 Minutes Apart, Shattering Its Own Record
SpaceX flew two Falcon 9 rockets from opposite U.S. coasts Saturday night — a Globalstar satellite mission from Florida and a classified U.S. Space Force payload from California — shattering its own record for the shortest gap between orbital launches.
SpaceX just made orbital launch look like a routine, on-demand service. On Saturday night, the company flew two Falcon 9 rockets from opposite coasts of the United States just 38.5 minutes apart, shattering its own record for the shortest gap between orbital missions. The previous mark of 65 minutes, set in August 2024 with back-to-back Starlink flights, had stood for two years, Space.com reports.
The first Falcon 9 lifted off from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida at 9:12 p.m. EDT, carrying eight satellites to low Earth orbit for Louisiana-based telecom company Globalstar. While its upper stage was still climbing, a second Falcon 9 blasted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California at 9:50 p.m. EDT on USSF-366, a classified mission for the U.S. Space Force whose payload remains largely secret. Both boosters returned safely: the Globalstar booster touched down at Cape Canaveral on its 14th flight, and the USSF-366 booster landed aboard the droneship Of Course I Still Love You in the Pacific on its 18th — a recovery that marked the 650th successful Falcon booster landing, Open Magazine notes.
The doubleheader is less a one-off stunt than a demonstration of cadence. It was SpaceX's 95th and 96th orbital launch of 2026 — roughly one Falcon 9 flight every 2.4 days — a year after the rocket flew 165 times, more than every other launch vehicle combined. The payloads also map the shifting satellite-phone landscape: Globalstar, which Amazon agreed to acquire and which already powers emergency features on iPhones and Apple Watches, is racing SpaceX's own Starlink to connect phones directly from orbit. SpaceX is, in effect, turning spaceflight into routine.
