Raindrops Are Tiny Lightning Bolts That Electrically Corrode Cars, Study Finds

A new study suggests rain has a secret weapon against metal that scientists have only just noticed. When a raindrop slides across an insulating surface — a leaf, a painted wall, a plastic panel — it strips away electrical charge, building to several thousand volts before it lands. Ars Technica reports that researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research showed these charged drops can punch microscopic holes straight through even Teflon, one of the toughest protective coatings on the market.
For decades, the accepted explanation for rain-driven corrosion was chemical: water carries dissolved salts and acids, abrasion grinds away coatings, and oxygen does the rest. The new work, published in Nature, adds an electrical step no one had fully measured. In the lab, raindrop-sized droplets were slid down a tilted leaf and onto a copper plate wrapped in a 60-nanometer Teflon film. After 3,000 drops — roughly an afternoon of moderate rain — the copper beneath had corroded. Drops that fell without picking up a charge left the same surface untouched.
High-speed cameras caught the mechanism: a charged drop stretches into a sharp Taylor cone as it nears the metal, and its charge drives the electric field past 60 kilovolts per millimeter — the breakdown threshold of Teflon — blowing a tiny hole the way a spark jumps a gap. The authors say the effect reaches bridges, hulls, painted steel, and outdoor electronics, and that thicker or field-tolerant coatings may be the fix.
