The annual Perseid meteor shower — widely considered the most reliable and spectacular meteor display of the year — is set to peak this week under nearly perfect viewing conditions. With a new moon arriving on August 12, the night sky will be at its darkest, allowing even the faintest meteors to cut bright trails across the summer sky.

The shower runs from mid-July through late August, but peak activity is concentrated on the nights of August 11 through 13. Under optimal conditions — clear skies far from city lights — observers in the Northern Hemisphere can expect up to 100 meteors per hour during the pre-dawn window, when the constellation Perseus climbs highest in the northeastern sky.

This year's display comes with an astronomical bonus: a total solar eclipse on August 12, visible along a narrow path crossing the Arctic, Greenland, and northern Russia. While only a small fraction of the world will witness the eclipse directly, the new moon that enables it ensures ideal dark-sky conditions for meteor watchers everywhere.

NASA recommends finding a location away from artificial lights, lying flat on your back with your feet facing northeast, and allowing at least 30 minutes for your eyes to fully adapt to the darkness. No telescopes or binoculars are needed — the Perseids are best viewed with the naked eye, appearing as fast, bright streaks radiating from Perseus, often leaving persistent trails that glow briefly after the meteor itself has vanished.

The Perseids originate from debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, a 16-mile-wide body that last passed through the inner solar system in 1992. Each August, Earth ploughs through this trail of cosmic dust, with particles striking the atmosphere at roughly 37 miles per second — producing the superheated plasma streaks we call shooting stars.

Unlike last year, when a bright moon washed out all but the brightest meteors, 2026 offers a rare combination: peak meteor activity, a moonless sky, and warm August nights across the Northern Hemisphere. For casual stargazers and seasoned astrophotographers alike, it may be the best Perseid show in years.
