Nvidia's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering Leaks via NBA 2K27, Modders Port It to RTX 40 GPUs

Nvidia's next-gen neural upscaler leaked in an NBA 2K27 early-access build. Within 24 hours, modders had it running on RTX 40-series cards Nvidia never intended to support.

Nvidia's next-generation DLSS 5 upscaler — the neural-rendering technology it previewed at SIGGRAPH 2026 — is out in the wild, and the modding community has already done what Nvidia hasn't: gotten it running on last-generation graphics cards.

The leak surfaced in an early-access build of NBA 2K27, which quietly shipped a hidden DLL (nvngx_dlssnr.dll) for the unreleased technology. Within hours, modders in the RenoDX community had the experimental neural-rendering pipeline running in Remedy's Control, and soon after in a growing list of other titles, Tom's Hardware reports.

The catch: the leaked binary was hard-locked to RTX 50-series "Blackwell" GPUs, because some of the CUDA binaries it calls can only be read by that hardware. But the AI model inside runs on FP8 math, which RTX 40-series "Ada Lovelace" cards already handle — so RTX Remix modder "Uncle Burrito" simply swapped out the incompatible CUDA binaries for Ada-compatible ones. "All I had to do was look into it to see what binaries it's actually using, find the ones that aren't compatible with Ada, and then patch in fresh ones myself," he told Tom's Hardware. The patch works on the RTX 4090 and 4080, Wccftech reports.

Don't expect miracles yet. This is an early, unoptimized build — early tests saw an RTX 5070 Ti fall from 71 to 35 fps at 4K, and the RTX 4090 shed roughly 39 percent of its frame rate, Tom's Hardware notes. Official DLSS 5 support for non-Blackwell hardware remains an open question; Nvidia may extend it to RTX 40 cards after watching the modders' work, though older RTX 30 "Ampere" GPUs lack native FP8 support and would be a much tougher lift.
