Nobel Laureate Ben Bernanke Joins Anthropic's AI Oversight Trust

Anthropic announced on July 9 that Nobel laureate and former Federal Reserve Chair Ben Bernanke has joined its Long-Term Benefit Trust (LTBT), the independent oversight body that holds the AI company to its mission of responsible development.

Bernanke, who led the Federal Reserve from 2006 to 2014 and steered the central bank through the 2008 global financial crisis, brings decades of economic expertise to the trust. He won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2022 for his research on banks and financial crises. Before government service, he spent over two decades as an academic economist at Princeton, where he chaired the economics department.

"The potential of artificial intelligence is enormous, and so is the range of outcomes. How that potential plays out will depend, in part, on the institutions we build around it," Bernanke said. "Anthropic has created a unique governance structure to try to ensure that the long-run benefits of AI for humanity far outweigh the risks."

The LTBT was established as part of Anthropic's structure as a Public Benefit Corporation. Trustees are deliberately kept independent of both management and investors — they hold no equity in Anthropic, receive no share of profits, and are compensated only for their time and service. New trustees are selected by existing ones in consultation with the company. The trust has the authority to appoint members to Anthropic's board of directors.

Daniela Amodei, Anthropic's Co-Founder and President, emphasized the economic dimension of AI governance. "AI may have the most significant economic effects of any technology in modern history, and Anthropic has a dual responsibility to understand those effects and to act on them," she said. "His judgment will make us better at anticipating and responding to how advanced AI affects workforces and economies around the world."

Neil Buddy Shah, Chair of the LTBT, added: "Ben spent eight years leading the Federal Reserve and guided the country through the worst financial crisis in nearly a century with expertise, independence, and sound judgment. That's the standard we look for in Trustees as AI's impact grows."

Bernanke joins existing trustees Neil Buddy Shah, Richard Fontaine, and Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar, whose collective expertise spans global health, national security, law, policy, and economics. The appointment drew discussion on Hacker News, where commenters weighed the effectiveness of independent oversight trusts in governing powerful AI companies.
