Keychron Announces First Open-Source Firmware for Gaming Mice

Keychron unveils ZGM, a GPL-3.0 open-source gaming mouse firmware built on Zephyr RTOS, bringing QMK/ZMK-style customization from keyboards to mice for the first time.

Peripheral maker Keychron has announced ZGM (Zephyr Gaming Mouse), the first open-source firmware designed specifically for gaming mice — bringing the same community-driven customization that QMK and ZMK brought to mechanical keyboards into a space where proprietary, locked-down firmware has been the norm.

Built on Zephyr RTOS and licensed under GPL-3.0, ZGM offers low-latency input processing, a modular driver architecture that decouples sensor, button, scroll wheel, and lighting layers, and first-class support for both wired and wireless connections with built-in battery management. The firmware is designed to support a wide range of microcontrollers, making it portable across different hardware.

The first device to ship with ZGM will be the Keychron G6 HE, a hybrid magnetic switch gaming mouse positioned as a competitor to the Logitech X2 SuperStrike. The firmware is scheduled for release in Q1 2027.

On Hacker News, the announcement generated significant enthusiasm, with many developers drawing parallels to the open-source keyboard firmware movement. Some commenters noted that open firmware eliminates the need to run manufacturer background software, as all settings are stored directly on the device's internal memory.
