JetZero Breaks Ground on Blended-Wing Aircraft Factory with Airlines Already Queued Up
The aerospace startup's 8-million-square-foot Greensboro facility targets early-2030s production as United, Alaska, JAL, and Gulf Air line up for its fuel-efficient Z4.
The aerospace startup JetZero has broken ground on an 8-million-square-foot blended-wing-body aircraft factory at Piedmont Triad International Airport in Greensboro, North Carolina, targeting initial production in the early 2030s with plans to reach 20 aircraft per month by the mid-2030s, Aviation Week reports.
The Z4 aircraft uses a blended-wing-body design that eliminates the traditional tube-and-wing configuration, cutting fuel consumption by up to 50% compared to conventional commercial jets of similar size. The aircraft seats 250 passengers with international range, according to JetZero.
Momentum behind the project has been building rapidly. United Airlines has invested with a path to purchase up to 200 aircraft. Alaska Airlines, through its Star Ventures arm, has also invested with options for future orders. Japan Airlines and Gulf Air have both signed letters of intent and partnerships for the Z4 program. The company has raised approximately $175 million in Series B financing, on top of a $235 million U.S. Department of Defense contract to develop a blended-wing-body prototype.
If JetZero delivers on its efficiency promises, the Z4 could represent the most significant change to commercial aircraft architecture since the jet age began — a shift airlines, still grappling with aviation's stubborn share of global carbon emissions, are watching closely.
