Google's Pixel 11 puts Gemini at the center of the AI phone war with Apple

Google unveiled the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold, centering its most autonomous Gemini yet -- 'Gemini Intelligence' -- as Apple prepares to rebuild Siri on Google's own AI models, with prices up roughly $100 across the lineup.

Google on Wednesday unveiled its Pixel 11 lineup -- the Pixel 11, Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 11 Pro XL, and Pixel 11 Pro Fold -- betting that an AI assistant that actually gets things done will finally give people a reason to upgrade.

The centerpiece is "Gemini Intelligence," a suite of agentic features that pull context from your messages, calendar, and Maps, then suggest or carry out the next step -- checking availability, comparing travel options, or starting a restaurant reservation -- instead of just answering questions. The rollout of Gemini Intelligence includes Gboard Rambler, a location-aware At a Glance, and other AI tools woven directly into the operating system (9to5Google).

Devices chief Rick Osterloh framed the launch as a turning point. "For the last 10 to 15 years, not a lot has changed in how you use laptops and mobile phones," he told CNBC. "We think that's about to change dramatically." He said Gemini could someday become "the primary way people use their phones."

The launch also puts Google in the awkward spot of competing with one of its biggest AI customers: Apple is rebuilding Siri around Google's Gemini models, chasing many of the same cross-app goals Google is now showcasing on Pixel. Osterloh pushed back on the idea the two experiences will be alike, insisting "Pixel and iPhone are going in very different directions."

The hardware got a boost too: slimmer cameras with stronger zoom, doubled base storage at 256GB, 30-hour battery life, live translation for video and voice, and a new Pixel Tag tracker. Prices start at $900 for the Pixel 11 and climb to $1,900 for the Pro Fold -- roughly $100 more across the board, which Osterloh tied to a shortage of RAM and flash memory that is pushing hardware costs higher.

The open question is whether any of it moves the upgrade needle. Counterpoint Research says AI still ranks around sixth or seventh among reasons people buy a new phone -- a reminder that, for now, the assistant is still selling the phone, not the other way around.
