Google DeepMind is bleeding talent at an accelerating pace, and Wall Street has noticed. In the span of a single week, five senior AI researchers left the company for rivals OpenAI and Anthropic, triggering a selloff that erased an estimated $270 billion from Alphabet's market capitalization.

The most prominent departure: Noam Shazeer, co-lead of Google's Gemini models and a 25-year veteran of the company. Shazeer, who briefly left Google to found Character.AI — only to be acqui-hired back for $2.7 billion in 2024 — is now headed to OpenAI. His exit came within days of John Jumper, the Nobel laureate-caliber researcher who led the AlphaFold project at DeepMind, announcing he would join Anthropic.

Two more Gemini researchers, Jonas Adler and Alexander Pritzel, also confirmed they were leaving for Anthropic, according to a Bloomberg report cited by TechCrunch. Both played key roles in developing Google's flagship AI model.

The exodus has triggered concern well beyond Mountain View. Alphabet shares dropped sharply on the news, with the cumulative talent loss contributing to what MemeBurn calculated as a $270 billion valuation hit. The departures come amid growing frustrations over Google's slower pace in shipping consumer-facing AI products compared to OpenAI and Anthropic.
