Demis Hassabis steps down as Google DeepMind CEO to become Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while Jeff Dean leaves after 27 years to launch an independent AI research company — marking the biggest leadership transition in Google's AI division since the DeepMind merger.

Google has announced the most significant leadership shake-up in its AI division since the 2023 DeepMind merger. Demis Hassabis is stepping down as CEO of Google DeepMind to take on the role of Chair of GDM and Chief Scientist of Alphabet, while Chief Scientist Jeff Dean is departing after 27 years to co-found an independent public benefit corporation with Google Senior Fellow Sanjay Ghemawat.

Hassabis described the moment as "a pivotal moment in human history," writing that AGI "is close at hand" and that he needs "time and space to focus on the big picture." He will continue to lead Isomorphic Labs, Alphabet's AI-driven drug discovery company, while advising Google DeepMind's leadership.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current CTO of Google DeepMind and Chief AI Architect, will step up as SVP of Google DeepMind, overseeing Gemini model development, Frontier AI research, and the Gemini app. Kavukcuoglu has worked alongside Hassabis for over 13 years since DeepMind's earliest days.

Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat — the duo behind foundational Google infrastructure like MapReduce, Bigtable, and TensorFlow — will launch an independent public benefit corporation focused on accelerating discoveries in machine learning, science, and engineering. Google will serve as a founding investor and Cloud partner.

The reshuffle comes amid strong momentum: Google reported the Gemini app has reached 950 million monthly users, Gemma models have surpassed 900 million downloads, and the company's AI research continues to produce field-defining breakthroughs.
