GM-Backed Peak Energy Breaks Ground on America's First Sodium-Ion Grid Battery Factory

Peak Energy, a Colorado-based startup with significant backing from General Motors, is building America's first dedicated sodium-ion battery factory for grid storage near Sacramento, California — a $71 million, 17,000-square-meter facility with annual capacity to produce 4 gigawatt-hours of batteries, enough to power roughly 4 million homes.

The factory, announced in July 2026, marks a turning point for sodium-ion technology in the United States. Previous American attempts — including startups Natron Energy and Bedrock Materials — shut down operations last year, joining a list of more than a dozen failed Western battery companies. China, meanwhile, is racing ahead: CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, dropped a bombshell in April with a 60-gigawatt-hour sodium-ion order to grid storage provider HyperStrong — the largest sodium-ion battery deal in history.

Peak Energy insists it can succeed where others failed. Unlike Natron, which ran out of money and investor patience, Peak has a giant in its corner. GM, like Tesla and other automakers, is pivoting aggressively into grid storage to keep massive battery factories operational amid softening EV demand. The partnership gives Peak both capital and manufacturing muscle.

Sodium-ion batteries offer a compelling cost advantage over the lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) cells that currently dominate grid storage. Sodium is abundant and cheap — extracted from seawater and salt deposits — eliminating the supply chain bottlenecks and price volatility associated with lithium, cobalt, and nickel. Peak's design features fully passive thermal management, a 20-year warranty with zero scheduled maintenance, and drop-in compatibility with existing battery energy storage systems. The company has already deployed systems with nine of the largest U.S. independent power producers and utilities, with over 10 months of grid operation.

The Sacramento factory, supported by a $55 million Series A funding round led by Temasek's Xora Innovation, positions Peak as the leading American contender in a sodium-ion race that could reshape the economics of renewable energy storage — and determine whether the U.S. can keep pace with China in the next generation of battery technology.
