Europe's Great Eclipse: Six Days to Totality

On August 12, the Moon's shadow sweeps across Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the first total solar eclipse over mainland Europe in 27 years. NASA and ESA have full coverage planned.

Six days from now, on August 12, 2026, the Moon will slide directly between Earth and the Sun, plunging a narrow corridor across the Northern Hemisphere into midday darkness — and for the first time since 1999, mainland Europe is in the path of totality.

The shadow touches down in the North Atlantic, makes landfall over northern Spain around 7:30 p.m. CEST, then races across Iceland and Greenland before departing into the Arctic. Cities like Gijón, Santander, and Reykjavík will experience up to two minutes of totality. The rest of Europe gets a deep partial eclipse, with the Sun reduced to a slender crescent from London to Berlin to Rome.

NASA has published its August 2026 skywatching guide detailing the eclipse path and safe viewing practices. The agency notes that even a 99% partial eclipse is nothing like totality — the difference, as any eclipse chaser will tell you, is literally night and day.

ESA, meanwhile, has released a comprehensive guide on how to watch the event from home. Livestreams from multiple locations along the path will be available for those outside the zone of totality. The agency is also leveraging its Proba-3 formation-flying satellites to study the Sun's corona during the eclipse, adding a layer of space-based observation to the ground-level spectacle.

As a cosmic bonus, the Perseid meteor shower — typically the year's most reliable display of shooting stars — peaks just a few nights later. August 2026 is shaping up to be an extraordinary month for anyone who looks up.
