AI-Designed Drug Shows Early Signs of Slowing Human Aging in a Clinical Trial
Insilico Medicine's AI-designed lung drug rentosertib lowered six proteomic aging clocks in a 42-patient phase 2a trial, an early hint that a pill could slow biological aging.
An artificial intelligence designed a drug that appears to nudge the human body's biological clock backward, according to a study published Monday in Nature Biotechnology.
The candidate, rentosertib, was created by Insilico Medicine, an AI drug-discovery company, and was originally aimed at treating idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a progressive lung-scarring disease. But the phase 2a trial also tracked six different proteomic aging clocks, AI models that estimate a person's biological age from blood proteins. Across all six clocks, the 42 patients who received the drug trended toward a lower biological age over the 12-week study, while those on placebo or no treatment saw their markers hold steady or climb, Gizmodo reports.
The result is striking but still far from a longevity pill. Aging clocks remain controversial, and there is no universally accepted measure of biological age. The study's authors note the proteomic models alone cannot cleanly separate a true anti-aging effect from the drug's effect on the underlying lung disease, though pathway analyses hinted at shifts in cellular senescence and metabolism. Rentosertib still faces many more trials before any regulatory approval.
